Check Engine Light or Oil Light Indicator
The check engine or oil light will illuminate on the dash of your car, these can indicate that there is a problem with your engine. The oil light is an indication from the engine, that it’s at risk of damage because there isn’t enough oil. Check the dipstick to see the level of oil. If you see that your car is running low, then it’s time to schedule an oil change to keep your car running smoothly.
Increased Engine Noises
Oil provides a protective layer between all the engine’s parts. Without enough oil, the engine will tear itself apart, which will cause excessive noise and knocking.
Unusual Oil Smell
If you notice an oil smell inside of your car, then you could have an oil leak. Also, if you smell gas or exhaust fumes this could be a sign that your car is overheating. You should call an automotive repair shop immediately if smell oil or gas fumes.
Exceeded the Recommend Mileage
It used to be every 3,000 miles, but with modern lubricants most engines today have recommended oil change intervals of 5,000-7,500 miles.
Examples of when you should change your oil more frequently:
- Vehicles that are not driven often should have an oil change at least once a year due to the oil becoming acidic in contact with the air and metals in the engine
- Cars & Trucks driven harshly, such as off road or towing/hauling need more frequent oil changes than cars used for highway use
